Meet Your Maker: Scott Collett
Owner and Winemaker, Woodstock
Woodstock’s Collett family are caretakers to some of the region's oldest Shiraz vines. Planted around 1900, Woodstock's old vine Shiraz block is one of the oldest vineyards in McLaren Vale, comprised of 31 rows of low yielding vines in deep sandy soils on a north-facing slope at the top of the family property.
Woodstock became the custodian of this particular vineyard in 1988 after its retiring owner Murray struck a deal with young enthusiastic vigneron Scott Collett. Murray turned down offers from ‘the big guys’ for the vineyard in favour of Scott, who agreed to continue to nurture the special vines with the same level of care that he had.
Today the vineyard continues to produce some of the best grapes in McLaren Vale, with Scott still tending each vine by hand, fulfilling the promise he made to Murray all those years ago. Woodstock’s flagship wine, ‘The Stocks’ Shiraz, is produced from only the best barrels from this vineyard.
Murray and Scott continue to share their passion for this incredible old vine Shiraz block, catching up regularly to discuss all the happenings in the vineyard. This year they toasted Murray’s 101st birthday together with a glass of Woodstock ‘Very Old Fortified’!
